Located at the heart of Istanbul's historical peninsula, surrounded by the ancient city walls and with views of two of the most magnificent masterpieces of world architecture Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque, Hotel Armada offers a unique experience to the visitor by gracefully blending the past and the present of the great city of Istanbul. The history of the site of the Armada Hotel in the ancient district of Ahırkapı extends back to the 16th century, when the Turkish Admiral Barbaros Hayrettin Pasha, known in the West as Barbarossa, had a series of buildings constructed to house his sailors after their long days at sea (and perhaps to keep them in sight of the sea as well!).

The buildings were destroyed in one of the great fires of Istanbul during the 18th century. The 16 separate houses that were constructed in their place at the beginning of the 19th century to generate revenue for the Directorate of Foundations eventually fell into ruin, and by the 1980s the area was being used as a parking lot.

The Chairman of the Board of Directors of Armada International Hotel Corporation, experienced tourism professional Kasım Zoto, obtained a 49-year lease from the Directorate of Foundations for the purpose of transforming the property into a 4 star hotel. The project was drawn up by architects Murat Sümen and Haydar Karabey, and with the consultancy of interior designer Gürel Yontan, construction began on the 2300 square meter lot and was completed in 18 months under the direction of Mehmet Ata Tansuğ. And so the home of Barbarossa’s sailors was transformed into the 4 star Armada Hotel...

The facade of the Armada Hotel is a reconstruction of the original rowhouses, based on their depiction in period engravings. Since its inauguration on 7 May 1994, the Armada Hotel has set a successful precedent for the renovation of other local historical buildings.

The rooms at our Hotel, turns an accommodation in Istanbul into best experience one can ever get as they are a graceful blend of past and present, designed in the Ottoman style with the traditional decoratively-painted wood paneling known as "Edirnekâri", yet offering all the modern amenities: personal climatization, direct-dial telephone service, mini-bar, LCD television, hairdryer, kettle, free wireless Internet connection and private safe-deposit boxe. Armada Terrace

The Terrace is an appealing rooftop retreat with spectacular views of Marmara Sea and the Bosphorus on the one side, and the Blue Mosque and the Haghia Sophia on the other. The Terrace is open throughout the summer as a restaurant and bar, where you can enjoy a fine meal, relax with a drink or just visit to admire the panoramic view. Dinner under the evening sky in this exhilarating yet relaxing setting is an experience to treasure. The Outdoor Terrace can host 250 people for dinner and 300 for cocktail arrangements.

The indoor Terrace restaurant where the guests are hosted during the winter period, was enlarged and re-decorated with small orange and mandarine trees. A wine cellar with a large collection of premium Turkish wines was also added. Thus, the restaurant also turned into a "Winter Garden" for the daytime guests while it keeps its unique position in the historical peninsula for the guests who want to enjoy Istanbul's night view...

The Terrace Bar is elevated from the terra cotta floor of the Armada Terrace by a timber platfrom and is elegantly shaded by white architectural fabric. Especially at sunset, with its spacious and ample seating provided on sofas and bar stools and white columns of light, the Terrace Bar creates an ambiance of travel on a comfortable boat deck.

At the Terrace Bar, our guests may enjoy cold and hot nibbles from “Çilingir Platters” accompanied by their evening drinks and Istanbul music…

RadioBar& Guest Lounge

This venue, originally designed to commemorate the "radio days" of the ‘50s and ‘60s, was transformed into a "Guest Lounge" ("Misafir Odası" in Turkish, which is a tradition of Turkish way of life) in the spring of 2006. Its furnishings in the style of turn-of-the-century Istanbul urban homes, with Art Nouveau armchairs, couches, old-time radios, accessories and light fixtures, a piano and the Istanbul library and newspaper and magazine racks, attract both locals and foreigners. Each of the comfortable seating groups is original and authentic. The historic "Radio Bar" has moved to the corner of the room, but continues to serve as it did before, with its neon lighting and antique liquor cabinets.

The Radio Bar has an interesting history: French artists who later became famous made their first stage appearances here. Sylvie Cobo, better known by her stage name “La Baronne,” is one of them. Turkish musicians also presented live performances, and Turkey’s most exciting and prestigious radio station, Açık Radyo, held its Annual Meeting here every year.

Armada Salon

The Armada Salon Restaurant hosts many local cultural events with its turn-of- the-century Istanbul decor and cuisine. It is not a typical "hotel restaurant" but a real gathering point for the citizens of Istanbul where the samples of the Istanbul cuisine are served for only special events such as the "Republic Ball" (on October 29th), "International Dance Festival", “Istanbul Tango Ritual” (www.istangoritual.org), "Valentine Day", "Ramadan Iftar" (the evening meal during Ramadan) and "Istanbul Weddings" are organized. Year round, “Milonga Night,” a celebration of the Turkish tango, can be enjoyed here on Monday evenings. It is also one of the venues that could be included in the meeting organizations for having luncheons and dinners without having to go out, particularly during winter.

The Armada Salon can accommodate 280 guests for dinner or 350 guests for cocktail gatherings and is available for an array of private social events as mentioned above..
